LAPD SWEEP HOMELESS ON VENICE BEACH

AUGUST 14-15, 2008

Like it or not the homeless are with us and probably always will be with us!  Whatever your views, the bottom line is that you or I could be in the same situation and how would we want to be treated?  In the current economic climate, it looks like there are going to be more people made homeless - maybe you or me.  Don't you think it's time we had a humane policy for dealing with these people rather than arresting them for sleeping on the beach?

The Venice Neighborhood Council's Arts Committee proposes series of Saturday afternoon music concerts

A proposal has been submitted by Michael (Micky) Schuman for a weekly concert series to take place annually throughout the Spring and Summer months. The first concert in this proposed series was scheduled for Saturday, August 16th, at Windward Plaza on Ocean Front Walk. Five additional concerts are planned for this year, with a full series of 22 concerts beginning next Spring.

The proposed series has been criticized by some Ocean Front Walk community members due to potential noise problems, the possibility of generating additional traffic that already clogged streets won't be able to handle and the risk of creating new security and trash problems in an area that is ranked as the second largest tourist destination in the Los Angeles area.  More

COMMERCIAL VENDING CONTINUES TO CLOG THE FREE SPEECH ZONE

Three amended ordinances and three years later the Free Speech Zone is 80% commercial vending and nobody cares. Except, that is, the handful of free speechers who struggle to find a space on the weekends to talk about issues close to their heart.

LAPD has given up enforcement, unless they are called out by someone who objects.  But, if you dare set up a free speech table outside one of the designated "zones" police officers will appear out of the blue to make sure you are removed under threat of arrest. Such is the plight of the 1st Amendment.

Word has it that merchants and artists alike are fed-up with the commercial competition but, so far, nothing has been said or done.  Rumor has it that a meeting is planned with the US District judge, Dean Pregerson, who presided over the several lawsuits that came before him, decrying the abuse of our civil liberties.  Coincidentally, or not, Pregerson was on the Board of Commissioners for Rec & Parks from 1989 to 1994 - could it be that the Honorable One is in collusion with the City on this issue?  Some think that it may be so - but whatever the case may be, Pregerson is determined and apprears to be going along with the City Attorney's office, run by Rocky Delgadillo, who is currently under investigation by the FBI - according to the S.F. Chronicle
